Cape Winemakers Guild

In 1983 a group of independent and innovative Cape Winemakers established the CAPE WINEMAKERS GUILD with a vision to create and promote wines of the highest quality.

Membersip of the Guild, which now stands at 38, is by invitation and relates to the talents, entrepreneurial flair and success of the individual winemaker. Monthly technical tastings facilitate the exchange of knowledge and sharing of the skills that maintain and enhance the benchmark excellence for which the CWG is recognised in South Africa and abroad.

Sponsorship by NEDCOR INVESTMENT BANK enables the Guild to manage and finance the promotion of its members’ wines through selection, showcasing and auction and by means of the NIB CWG DEVELOPMENT TRUST to provide for empowerment and social development within the wine industry workforce.

The Trust benefits from donations and from all proceeds of the Guild’s annual Silent Auction, which features specially selected and beautifully bottled and packaged wines donated by the members.

Since 1985 Guild members have offered a reserve selection of their best wines at the annual NIB CWG Auction. Price Waterhouse Coopers audits the selection procedure, and the creative and innovative purpose of the winemakers is highlighted by rigorous screening that ensures the ageing potential and technical excellence of the wines.

Many of these unique wines come from single-vineyard blocks, which are vinified separately and pampered in the cellar in a way not viable on large commercial scale, and are available for purchase only at the Guild auctions.
