Merlot Vertical tasting: November 2008

2004 This vintage seems to have gained more depth and complexity in the bottle over the last year.  Deep true red colour.  Rich red berry and cherry fruit on the palate with plenty of fine tannins and a classic long dry finish.  Should still improve over 2 or 3 years and last 4 or 5 years.

2003 Still rather youthful.  Deep red colour.  Dark cherry and plum nose with spices and roasted oats.  Big, intensely flavoured, but still restrained, suggesting much more to evolve with time.  Drink around 2010 to 2016.

2002 Medium red colour.  A little light from one of the weakest vintages, but not showing much age.  Attractive nose with subtle Eucalypt and spicy red berries.  Soft and ready to drink, but should keep at least 3 or 4 years.

2001 Medium deep red colour.  One of the most classic, Pomerol-like wines, with rich red berry, plummy fruit and dust, earthy complexity.  Ready now, but should still keep 5 or 6 years.

2000 (Old Mutual Trophy Show Winner) Deep red colour.  Attractive big, rich, meaty, plummy nose.  Big and obvious, but still quite stylish and very complex.  The favourite wine of the tasting.  Ready now, but should keep 3 or 4 years.

1999 Medium red colour with brickish rim.  Attractive red fruit and slightly powdery nose.  Nice satin textured palate.  Not that much complexity, probably a function of vine stress at harvest.  Drink up.

1998 Thick red colour with brickish hue.  Quite meaty nose with berry, cherry, behind some spicy nuttiness.  Big dollop of mature ripe fruit, but rather spoilt with ungainly tannins that take over on the mid palate and continue to a rather hard finish.  Chunky awkward wine with a lot of character, but little finesse.  Enjoy now with a hefty chunk of grilled beef.

1997 Medium red fruit with tawny rim.  Attractive nutty, cedary nose with brambleberry in the background.  Dusty dry palate.  Drinking nicely now with nice Bordeaux like structure, but losing fruit.

1996 Pale brownish colour showing age.  The weakest vintage to date and showing surprisingly well.  Quite organic, pongy in a positive Pinot Noir-like way.  A bit thin and Bordeaux like on palate.  Past its best, but still pleasant to drink.

1995 Pale medium red colour.  Big rich plummy nose with complex smoky and spicy character.  Lovely textured palate.  Some rich fruit still showing well and carrying through to a fine finish.  At peak now.

1994 Light but clear attractive red colour showing a little age.  Dry red berry fruit and dustiness.  Fine supple tannins and nice fruit concentration.  At peak now.

1993 Pale red with browning edge, a little brighter than the ’92.  Clear red fruit on nose with nuts and dustiness and a complex purity.  Palate still with lively acidity, but fruit drying and a rather bony structure.  Drink up, especially with sophisticated pasta dishes.

1992 Pale red with slight brown edge.  Nose still rather attractive with a complex smoky earthy Pinot Noir like character.  Fruit drying out a bit on the mid palate but still pleasant and quite complex with a nice finish.  Drink up, but proud of this our first vintage – a single 300 l barrel!
