THE CAPE WINEMAKERS GUILD

I was fortunate enough to have been invited to join the Cape Winemakers Guild in 2000. The Guild is an association of some of the finest South African winemakers, much like the VDP association in Germany. The CWG was formed in 1982 and has evolved into a body of 49 members who jointly represent the pinnacle of South African wine achievement.

Guild members have played a significant role in the development of the South African wine industry. We meet regularly as a technical tasting group, providing its members with an opportunity to evaluate wines from around the world and to share their knowledge & ideas.

Each year we put forward one or two wines for the CWG Auction held in October in Stellenbosch. Usually just a barrel or two of our best and most interesting wine made especially for the auction and not available elsewhere. We usually put forward a wine called 'Perspective', a Cabernet Franc led Bordeaux blend.

The CWG Development Trust supports social development through further education in the South African wine industry. Current projects include the Guild's Oenology & Viticulture Protege programs, the AgriSeta Billy Homeyer Bursaries and Wine Training South Africa.
